I'll admit, the score for Percy Jackson took me a good while to warm up to. Bear was always my ideal choice, but I think the album release being so minimal and the sound being different than what I was expecting/hoped was what initially soured the taste of it for me. But upon watching the show with my partner and listening to the score multiple times over, I've come to really enjoy this theme! It's a simple five-note motif played heroically on a solo French horn, sometimes strings and sometimes even more brass, but it always has a heroic, valiant feel to it whenever it's played. It's relatively simple, but I think the accompanying elements of the theme as well as it's variations for Percy's more emotional and vulnerable moments help to give the theme some more texture and impact. Accompanying Percy is a rushing three note ostinato played by a string ensemble, perfectly portraying the adventure and rush of Percy's quest, with it building up with more and more instrumental layering. Another ostinato is six notes and usually played with regards to Percy's discovery of his demigodhood, and a simple two note ostinato played on lighter strings that build more mystery to his powers and personage. All around, I feel like this is going to end up being one of McCreary's best themes in years to come, especially in the ways it'll grow and change with Percy across the coming seasons. Because with season one under our belt, I think the foundation for it is already pretty damn strong.
