Two more years pass before Obierika visits Mbanta again, bringing news of the arrival of white Christian missionaries in Umuofia. They have built a church and recruited converts, though the clan leaders view them as weak and worthless. Obierika's main reason for visiting is to inform Okonkwo that he saw Nwoye with the missionaries in Umuofia. When questioned, Nwoye identifies himself as one of them and disowns Okonkwo as his father.

Okonkwo refuses to discuss Nwoye with Obierika, but Nwoye's mother reveals that six men, including a white man, visited Mbanta and spoke about Christianity. They preached about a new god who would replace the villagers' traditional gods and promised eternal life in his kingdom. Despite Okonkwo's dismissal, Nwoye was drawn to the missionaries' message, finding solace in their teachings about compassion and questioning traditional customs.
